Your first horseback riding lesson at Memory Lane Farm lasts one hour and starts with grooming and tacking up your horse before you ever get in the saddle. You do not need any experience, your own horse, or your own equipment. Riders of every level are matched with a horse suited to their comfort and ability, and lessons run private, semi-private, or group.

What should I wear to my first lesson?

Wear long pants that can move freely, such as jeans or riding tights, and closed-toe shoes with a small heel if you have them. Sneakers are fine for a first visit. Avoid loose scarves, jewelry, or baggy clothing that could catch on tack. Helmets are provided if you do not have your own.

How long does a lesson take, and what happens first?

Each lesson is one hour. The first part is spent grooming and tacking up so you learn how to care for a horse before riding one. Your instructor then walks you through mounting, basic position, and how to communicate with your horse using your seat, legs, and hands. Most first-timers spend the majority of the lesson at a walk, building the balance and confidence needed before trotting.

Do I need to know how to ride already?

No. Memory Lane Farm welcomes beginners taking their first ride through advanced equestrians. Lessons teach English-style riding, and cart driving lessons are also available for riders who prefer to work from the ground or alongside a horse rather than on it.

What does a lesson cost?

Private lessons are $150 per hour. Semi-private and group lessons are $120 per hour. Group lessons require advance scheduling, arranged directly with Jessica Owen-Smith by phone or text.
